63. Rock Goes the Gospel - YES "Changes"

This is the first devotional for the new year and  I though some YES was in order. "Changes" is a song by the progressive rock band Yes, from their 1983 album, 90125. This prog rock song "Changes" was written by Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin, just before his joining the band. Once Rabin joined the band, additional music and lyrics were contributed by singer Jon Anderson and drummer Alan White for the version that would appear on 90125. White and Anderson adapted Trevor Rabin's song before it was released on 90125.

"The lyric I wrote in a very depressed time," he told Tim Morse in 1995. "I had just moved to America and had these thoughts of doing wonderful things. I was with Geffen Records on a development deal and they just wanted me to form a Rock n' Roll band and I was really trying to do something different. In a meeting I went to they played Foreigner to me and they said, 'You've got to start writing stuff more like Foreigner.' I said, 'I'm not going to, but thanks anyway.' I thought, 'I'm going through all these changes, it's very strange. And consequently I think that's when that song started coming to me. It's kind of a melancholy song."

I'm moving through some changes

I'll never be the same
Something you did touched me
There's no one else to blame

The love we had has fallen
The love we used to share
We've given up pretending
As if you didn't care

Change changing places
Root yourself to the ground
Capitalize on this good fortune
One word can bring you round
Changes

I look into the mirror
I see no happiness
All the warmth I gave you
Has turned to emptiness
The love we had has fallen
The love we used to share
You've left me here believing
In love that wasn't there

Change changing places
Root yourself to the ground
Word to the wise - Well you get what's coming
One word can bring you round
Changes

When I look into your eyes and try to find out how
There's no way to save it now
And everything I feel
Changes
Keep looking for
Changes
Changes

For some reason you're questioning why
I always believe it gets better
One difference between you and I
Your heart is inside your head

One word from you
One word from me
A clear design on your liberty
Who could believe when love has gone
How we move on like everyone

Only such fools
Only such jealous hearts

Only through love changes come

Change changing places
Root yourself to the ground
Capitalize on this good fortune
One word can bring you round
Changes

One road to loneliness
It's always the same
One road to happiness
It's calling your name

Change changing places - Changes
Root yourself to the ground
Capitalize on this good fortune
One word can bring you round
Changes

Change changing places
Changes
Root yourself to the ground
Word to the wise - Well you get what's coming
One word - One word can bring you round
Changes

Not everyone likes the thought of a new year. For some it fills them with dread and depression. In the lyrics you find the line "Changes - Root yourself to the ground" These are great sentiments for a new year. Everyone will face the "Changes" that are spoken about in the lyrics of this great prog rock song. Some people are more able to handle the "Changes" when they come. "Changes" come in various sizes and at various times. Sometimes the world just seems to be spinning out of control, sometimes it's just our perception. Whatever is happening "Changes" can stop us in our tracks. Rabin is right "Only through love can changes come"

Ephesians 3:14-19
Paul's Prayer For Strength
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Paul in his letter to the Ephesian church prays for the stability of the church. Stability for every individual. rooted is the word he uses and note this. It's not rooted in faith but rooted in the love of God. Planted and growing is what Paul is meaning in this context. Rooted in the love of God. Rooted in the knowledge that he loves us. Rooted in the fact that his love places us at the centre of his will. Rooted in love would be another way of saying planted right at the centre of the heart of God. Paraphrased it might sound a bit like this "I seek God that you may know that you are placed at the very centre of the plans and will of God for your life, that you will not uproot and move from there. This is to be your planting, growing and dwelling place.  Now that's a pray for the beginning of the year. That despite all the changes that come that you will be planted (Rooted) Growing (Living) in the love of God (The very centre of his will for your life) Despite all the storms that will come this year don't lose sight of this. Trvor Rabin is right "Root yourself to the ground" Paul the great apostle is right "Rooted and Grounded" May God Bless you today in the coming year.

Prayer:
Lord. Give me the ability this day to know that I am "rooted and grounded" in your will. That nothing that comes my way has the power to take me from this place. AMEN.
