33. Eagles "Lyin' Eyes"

They were one of the biggest success stories of the 1970's. From Linda Ronstadt's former backing group to one of the pre tier rock and roll bands of it's era. A southern Californian style rock band. The eagles landed in 1972 and stayed there till there demise in 1980. Core members Don Henley, and Glen Frey were there through it all. There song writing was genius. At time the lyrics were bittersweet examinations of modern culture in California. The eagles were were chalk and cheese to the other Californian band the Beach Boys. The eagles blended their country rock with ill fated male/female relationships from cheating hearts to lyin' eyes.

It is possible to hid lyin' eyes, but only for a while. The eyes are mirrors of the soul and will eventually betray their dark secrets. That is why it is so important to look someone straight in the eye and believe what that person is saying. When there is deep eye presence, souls are laid bear and the possibility of deception, while it is still possible is minimal. It is often when people lose their gaze for each other that trouble begins. the lies that are told can be about anything, and are not limited to one area of deception. They may be about addiction or an obsession or some other dimension or infidelity or distancing because the pain is to much to express.

Eye contact is so important in both personal relationships and in day to day social and business contacts. It is crucial to the level of mutual understanding and trust. If you look at someone with whom you are about to update a business deal with and what you get is a blank stare or a constantly diverted look, you may do well to be worried. Of course it may be shyness, but it also may be a cover for deceit. Of course in the song "Lyin' Eyes" it's about a broken relationship and fulfilment in the arms of another.

City girls just seem to find out early
How to open doors with just a smile
A rich old man
And she won't have to worry
She'll dress up all in lace and go in style

Late at night a big old house gets lonely
I guess every form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is
Only given to a man with hands as cold as ice

So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down
But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin'
She is headed for the cheatin' side of town

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin eyes

On the other side of town a boy is waiting
with fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal
She drives on through the night anticipating
'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel

She rushes to his arms,
They fall together
She whispers that it's only for awhile
She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever
She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide you lyin' eyes

She gets up and pours herself a strong one
And stares out at the stars up in the sky
Another night, it's gonna be a long one
She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry

She wonders how it ever got this crazy
She thinks about a boy she knew in school
Did she get tired or did she just get lazy?
She's so far gone she feels just like a fool

My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things
You set it up so well, so carefully
Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things
You're still the same old girl you used to be

You can't hide your lyin eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
Honey, you can't hide your lyin' eyes

"Lies" and "Truth" is what today's devotional is about.

Truth is defined as “sincerity in action, character, and utterance”. Perhaps the most famous verse about truth in the Bible is what Jesus said “… I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) So Jesus is truth and Jesus is also the Word (John 1:1, 14).  Truth is what we should build our lives upon. Truth is the foundation stones for a good life. The bible has a number of passages that point us to walking and speaking truth in our lives.
Psalm 15:1-2 "O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart"
Zechariah 8:16 "These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace"
Ephesians 4:25 "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbour, for we are members one of another."
1 John 1:8 "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us"
1 John 3:18 "Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth"
All of are guilty of withholding the truth, telling lies. Some times we justify that by saying it was for that persons good. or we say it was only a white lie. (Whatever that is) To be truthful and straight is about character and the character is about the heart of a person. No matter the cost to be honest and true. No matter the cost to be without deceit. No matter the cost to live life in truth.

Philippians 2:12-16 is a wonderful passage about the person of good and true character.
Philippians 1:12-16 "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labour in vain"
May we all live our lives in the way that the good Lord intended. Honest and true. It would be my prayer that you never encounter "Lyin' eyes" in any of your transactions and that people never encounter "Lyin Eyes" in you either.
