151. Switchfoot - "Dare You To Move"

"Dare You to Move" is a single by the alternative rock band Switchfoot from the band's fourth studio album, The Beautiful Letdown. The song was originally called "I Dare You to Move", and was on the album Learning to Breathe, but the band decided to remix it and put it on The Beautiful Letdown. The song received considerable radio airplay, and its accompanying music videos saw play on MTV, VH1, FUSE TV, and other mainstream channels. It peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Switchfoot's second top twenty single, surpassing the success of their breakthrough single, "Meant to Live" although it was more successful internationally.

The song, which appears as the fifth track on The Beautiful Letdown was a long-lasting hit and was eventually certified gold in April 2005. The song received positive reviews from critics, and was ranked #73 on Rhapsody's list of the Top 100 Tracks of the Decade. "Dare You to Move" was co-produced by Charlie Peacock—who discovered Switchfoot and signed the band to its first record deal—and John Fields.

Dare You to Move is a deeply emotional song by Switchfoot that urges you to get past whatever it is that’s holding you still, whether it’s an event in the past that you need to move beyond, a frightening obstacle ahead of you, or just a bout of inertia. Take the dare and make a positive change today. Make a move, add to your faith today.

Welcome to the planet
Welcome to existence
Everyone's here
Everyone's here
Everybody's watching you now
Everybody waits for you now
What happens next
What happens next

[Chorus]
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened before

Welcome to the fallout
Welcome to resistance
The tension is here
Tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

[Chorus]

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here

I dare you to move
I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
I dare you to move
I dare you to move
Like today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened
Today never happened before

The qualities listed in these verses are impressive. What is perhaps surprising is the command to make every effort to supplement them. This suggests that we CAN have some effect in this regard. By effort, we can grow in godliness, virtue, and love, as well as the more obvious knowledge. So the question bears asking: which of these qualities are you adding to your life in an effort to grow as a follower of Jesus? Which are you ignoring to add? Might you increase your effort or add another area of emphasis?

Notice also the promise in verse 8 – if you are growing in these qualities, you will also grow in effectiveness and fruitfulness with respect to the Lord. Is this a priority for you? Do you sometimes wonder how to have any impact yourself? Here is a clear answer. Make effort to grow in these qualities and it WILL bear fruit. Given this, what might you devote some attention to? What are you going to add. How about knowledge? Virtue? Godliness? Why not reflect on one and pray about how you can exert some effort to increase your effectiveness?

There's no progress in any area of our lives if we are not willing to pay the price. If your goal is to progress physically to where you can run a 10K race, you're foolish to think you can do it without paying the price of training. If your goal is to build a healthy retirement income for the future, for most of us it's foolish to think we can do it without paying the price today.

If your goal is be the very best mum or dad you can be, you'll not accomplish that without paying the price of spending quality time with your children. And if your goal is to make progress spiritually, you have to be willing to pay the price. You will have to give intention and devotion to adding the things Peter talks about. They don't just happen by chance.
