4. Understanding Jesus - Part 3 - "EPIC JESUS" - Matthew 28:16-20

Matthew 28: 16-20

INTRODUCTION: We are currently working our way through a preaching series called Cultivating a passion for Jesus. We have already studied “Seeing Jesus”, Understanding Jesus Pt1 – “The Sown Seed”. Understanding Jesus Pt 2– “Christ the Ransom”, and now today we will be looking at Understanding Jesus Pt3 –“Epic Jesus”.

Today we look at the “God with us” gospel. The Gospel context is that Matthew is all about Jesus with us. Matthew 1 and Matthew 28 are the bookends of the gospel and are saying the same things. God is with us in Jesus.

READING:  MATTHEW 28:16-20 “Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The context of the passage we have just read is resurrection. We also see that the immediate context is about the commission of the new community of God to reach the nations with the good news of Jesus The new community are tasked by Jesus himself with the continuation of his work in the world. These are actual words of Jesus. He is speaking of himself and his role.

1. “ALL NATIONS” - vs19
Jesus says discipleship is possible for the whole world.
· Why do we live as if Jesus said “stay and do nothing”.?
· Teaching Jesus in the World, His words, His truth, His way.
· Baptize and teach says Jesus, Teach and baptize says the church.
· You are not alone – I’am with you.

2. ALWAYS - vs20
Jesus says there are no barriers in time and space to his presence.
· Why do we live as if this was not true?
· I am with you some of the time.
· I am with you when you are doing good.
· I am with you when you have tried everything else.
· I am with you if you believe.
· No I am with you………..It’s grace and it depends on him.

3. ALL AUTHORITY - vs18
Jesus says All Authority and power in heaven and on earth has been given to Him.
· This is the “Epic Jesus”
· Colossians 1:
· Ephesians 1:
· The contents of Hebrews
· The vision of Revelation.

CONCLUSION: Everything changes when we understand Jesus. Our whole outlook on life changes. This is the kingdom’s king. With him you can do everything. Without him you can do nothing. HIS LIFE, HIS GOSPEL, HE IS THE KING, HE IS ON THE THRONE. IT’S HIS WORLD, HIS CHURCH, HIS MISSION AND WE …….WE ARE HIS PEOPLE. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HIM…..NOT ON US!
