Just after "Please Forgive Me" was released Bryan Adams was asked about this song he replied: "We needed a song for the greatest hits album, which was entitled So Far So Good. Mutt Lange came up with the idea for the song and we wrote it while working in France in 1993. It was the first time we had recorded with a whole band in the studio, some of the musicians I'd never worked with before like David Paich on piano. Before this band session, we had recorded the album Waking Up The Neighbours instrument by instrument. It was good to be back with a band. It reached Number 2 in the UK charts in 1993 and the album that "Please Forgive Me" comes from "So Far So Good" reached Number One in the UK Album charts.

Essentially this song is not really about forgiveness. Although the lyrics include the words "Please Forgive Me" The person in the song is asking for forgiveness for loving too much. So much so that it may seem overwhelming. Perhaps the recipient of that love feels overtaken by that love and wants to slow things down. this song is an attempt to explain his feelings to his lover. That she is first in his life. The main theme of the song is a love that will not die, a passion that will not go away, a commitment that goes on, a devotion that lasts the course.
When John the apostle sees his "Revelation" vision he is encouraged by Jesus to write to the seven churches in in Asia Minor but the messages that are contained in his writing are relevant for every church in any age. When John writes to the church in Ephesus he says this.
Revelation 2:1-7 "1 “To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ‘The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.
2 “‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. 3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. 6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.’"
John writes to a church that are getting things right. They work hard, they resist evil and evil workers. They keep to sound doctrine. they know what it is to endure and be patient. All of this is good but he says to them from Jesus 4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. They have forsaken their first love. They have moved away from Dedication and Devotion. the have no commitment to that relationship. They look as if they are doing well but really they are impoverished. They have will fully abandoned. they could not ask for forgiveness for loving too much. their love was gone. This church may well have had it's doctrine right but it's heart left much to be desired. The Bryan Adams song could never come true for them, they could never be asking forgiveness for loving to much as they had abandoned that love completely. A church as well as a person can look to have all the right things in place but they heart can be far from God. It is my hope and pray today that you have your heart and mind centred on your relationship with Jesus. Do not forsake Him. Love him and be devoted to Him.
